It's 7:30 on a December evening. Pyjamas are on, teeth are (mostly) brushed, and the big light goes off. Then the ceiling fills with drifting snowflakes and a reindeer sleigh, and suddenly nobody is arguing about bedtime.
A Christmas projector for a kids' bedroom is one of the simplest ways to bring that feeling home. There's no ladder, no tangle of fairy lights and nothing to hang on the walls. But not every projector suits a child's room. Here's what to look for, in about five minutes.
Why a projector beats fairy lights in a child's room
- No strings near the bed. Fairy lights end up wrapped around headboards and within reach of small hands. A projector sits on a shelf and does its work from there.
- Low power. Small LED projectors run on very little power. Our Santa's Sky uses a 5W LED.
- No drills, no hooks. Ideal if you rent, or simply don't want holes in freshly painted walls.
- It changes with the mood. Snowflakes for bedtime, Santa for Christmas Eve, a bright scene for a party.
What to look for in a Christmas projector for a kids' bedroom
1. Brightness and room size
Small projectors look their best in a dark or dim room. With the curtains drawn, a typical child's bedroom is exactly right. Don't expect a clear picture in daylight or with the main light on.
2. Low heat and USB power
Choose an LED projector that runs on USB. It plugs into a phone charger, a power bank or a laptop, so there are no batteries to replace. Check whether a wall plug is included. Many projectors, ours included, work with the USB charger you already own.
3. Still scenes or moving scenes
Moving scenes are mesmerising at playtime. A still scene can be calmer for falling asleep. Some children love watching the snow turn; others settle faster with a quiet picture. If you're not sure, think about how your child winds down.
4. One scene or several
Some projectors show a single design all season. Others use swappable discs, so the room can change from snowflakes to reindeer in a few seconds. More scenes keep it exciting through December.
5. Cord length and where the socket is
Look at where the nearest socket is before you buy. Santa's Sky has an 84 cm cord, so it needs a shelf or bedside table close to a plug. A power bank solves this if the socket is across the room.
6. Safety basics
Use the projector indoors only and keep it away from water. Place it, and its cord, out of reach of babies and toddlers, and well away from cots. As with any small electronic, supervise young children.

Choose Starlit if your child likes to be in charge. Six discs in the box mean a different Christmas every evening, and the bendable neck can point at the ceiling, a wall or even the window.
Choose Santa's Sky if your child settles best watching something gentle. Plug it in and the scene starts turning on its own, with no buttons to fiddle with.
Plenty of families get one of each: one for the children's room and one for the living room. Both come with a bundle discount when you buy two.

Shop StarlitShop Santa's SkyWhere to put it for the best picture
- Go high and point up. A chest of drawers or bedside table is ideal. Aim at the part of the ceiling above the bed.
- Distance changes the size. The farther the projector is from the ceiling, the bigger the picture, but it gets softer. Closer means smaller and sharper. Try two or three spots before you settle.
- Keep it out of reach. Little hands love glowing things. A high shelf keeps both projector and cord safe.
- Movie night? Turn it towards a plain wall above the sofa.

Five ways to use it beyond bedtime
- One new scene for each week of Advent. Starlit has six discs: one for each Sunday of Advent, one for Christmas Eve and one for Christmas morning. Children love the countdown.
- "Santa's on his way." On Christmas Eve, switch to the reindeer scene once the stockings are hung.
- Family movie night. Point it at the wall above the sofa while the Christmas film plays.
- Holiday party backdrop. The room decorates itself before guests arrive.
- Your Christmas card photo. Project a scene onto a plain wall and sit the children in front of it. No props, no printing.
