Quick answer
Wreath size ≈ door width − 30 cm
Choose a wreath about 30 cm narrower than your front door, then round to the nearest size. A standard door is around 84 cm wide, so a 61 cm (24 inch) wreath is just right.
That is the rule most home designers use. A wreath this size is big enough to look full from the street, and still leaves a margin of door around it so it doesn't feel cramped. The rest of this guide shows how to measure your door, how high to hang the wreath and how to hang it without a single nail.
How to measure your front door
- Measure the door leaf, not the frame. Run a tape measure across the widest part of the door itself, from edge to edge.
- Write it down in cm. Most front doors in the UK and Europe are 80 to 100 cm wide. A standard UK external door is about 84 cm.
- Look at what's on the door. A letterbox, a glass panel, a handle or a door knocker can decide where the wreath goes and how large it can be.
Wreath size chart in cm
| Door width | Wreath to choose | Door left on each side |
|---|---|---|
| 70–80 cm | 61 cm (24") | about 5–10 cm. A snug fit, so check the door handle |
| 80–95 cm | 61 cm (24"), the classic choice | about 10–17 cm |
| 95–110 cm | 61 cm for a classic look, 91 cm (36") for a bold look | about 17–25 cm, or 2–10 cm |
| Over 110 cm | 91 cm (36") | 10 cm or more |
| Double door | One 61 cm wreath on each leaf, or one 91 cm wreath across both | — |
A 91 cm wreath covers almost the whole of a standard door, so keep it for a wide front door, a door you rarely use, a blank wall or the space above a fireplace indoors.

How high to hang a wreath
The traditional way is to hang it so the top edge of the wreath sits about 35 cm below the top of the door. On most doors that puts it near eye level, above the letterbox and the door knocker.
If your door has a glass panel at the top, hang the wreath in the middle of the glass. In the evening the lights inside shine out from behind it, which looks lovely.

Over-door hanger
A metal hook that goes over the top edge of the door. It is the quickest option. Check the door still closes properly with the hook on, especially if it has a thick draught excluder.
Removable adhesive hook
Stick it to a clean, dry, flat surface and wait as long as the packet says before you hang anything. Check the hook's weight rating against the weight of the wreath.
Ribbon over the top of the door
Tie the wreath to a long ribbon, pass the ribbon over the top of the door and fix it on the inside with an adhesive hook. Finish with a big bow at the top. Our Classic Red Ribbon and Gold Glitter Ribbon both come in 10 yard rolls (about 9 m), more than enough for the hanging loop and a bow.
Magnetic hook
Only for steel doors. Test it first with a fridge magnet.

Flocked or green? Lit or unlit?
Match the wreath to your door colour
- Dark door (black, navy, dark green): a snow flocked wreath stands out from across the street.
- Light door (white, cream, pastel): a deep green wreath, such as the 24" Royal Fir or the 24" Douglas Fir, gives good contrast.
- Red door: a green wreath with gold ribbon, or a white flocked wreath for a classic Christmas card look.
Battery or plug-in lights
Most front doors don't have a socket nearby, so a battery-powered wreath is the easiest choice. Our lit 61 cm wreaths, such as the 24" Snow Flocked Wreath with LED lights, run on batteries and have a built-in timer. The lit 91 cm wreaths, like the 36" Snow Flocked Wreath, are plug-in, so they suit a place with a socket close by.
Browse by style: flocked, green, pre-lit or unlit.

Finish the entrance
- Frame the door with garland. A door 84 cm wide and 2 m high needs about 5 m of garland to run up one side, across the top and down the other. That is two of our 9 ft (2.7 m) garlands, such as the Noble Fir Garland with LEDs or the battery-powered Snow Flocked Garland.
- Add a pair of small trees. Two 90 cm tabletop trees in pots either side of the step make the entrance look complete.
- Match the windows. A smaller version of the same style in the window next to the door ties it all together. See our no-drill Christmas window decoration ideas.
Christmas wreath FAQ
Measure once, enjoy all season
Get a tape measure and take 30 cm off your door width. That is your wreath size, and for most front doors it is 61 cm. Hang it 35 cm from the top, add a bow, and your door is ready for Christmas.
